The first thought that leaps to mind when thinking about the Samsung Q430 is “they sure didn’t name it very well.” That may seem like a small thing, but having a catchy, recognizable name helps customers associate a particular line of computers with its primary function or reputation. “Q430” washes into the sea of integers and specs that is the business laptop market.

What this business lacks in branding it makes up for in looks. The faux brushed-metal exterior of the Q430 complements its 14-inch screen well. The business laptop’s sturdy keyboard and functional trackpad make it look and feel stylish.

Under the hood, you find everything you expect in a laptop of this class. With one exception – no Bluetooth. What year does Samsung think it is?

Open this business laptop’s lid and you’ll find its 14-inch display. The screen’s native resolution is 1366 by 768 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:9. This is roomy enough to run two applications side by side without problem.

Samsung introduced a different keyboard style for this model of business laptop. The isolated keys not only look good but also provide some extra space between keys. Samsung has also raised the keys a bit more. These changes result in an improved typing experience over other machines in the Q family.

Power drawn from the business laptop’s 6-cell battery will last between four to five hours on a full charge. So you should be able to put the final touches on your presentations while you’re on the plane.

The Q430 lacks some critical features we look for in business laptops. Among them, a 10-key number pad, quick-start functionality and a fingerprint scanner.

This business laptop makes up some ground in the processor department. Its quick core i5 processor is sufficient to run Word, Excel and other programs in the Microsoft Office Suite with ease. An NVIDIA GeForce graphics card displays video on the Q430.

The Q430 comes loaded with 4GB of RAM, which is almost universal for business laptops in this class. The bigger story is the hard drive; it’s a whopping 500GB. That’s a lot. Higher-ranked products on this lineup have half this storage capacity. You don’t need to worry about running out of space on this business laptop.

The connectivity selection is a mixed bag on this business laptop. You do get three USB ports, which is a plus. However, the Q430 loses major points by omitting Bluetooth wireless connectivity. That’s like building a car without a radio. We are puzzled by this surprising omission.

Other ports on this business laptop include Ethernet, HDMI and an SD card reader. If they omitted any of those three, they would have sunk even further in the connectivity department.

Samsung offers multiple support options. You can call them to talk to a friendly representative. You also have the option to use their website to find answers to commonly asked questions and access their forums.

Summary:

In the end, a polished look, gigantic hard drive and redesigned keyboard can’t save the Samsung Q430 from some serious design flaws. The lack of Bluetooth connectivity, missing 10-key number pad and other shortcomings park this business laptop midway between reliable workhorse and the machine you lend to the intern traveling with you.
