Asus’s latest venture into the business laptop market comes in the form of the B-series. The specific model we used for this review is the Asus B43F. As far as business laptops go, this one is almost as nondescript as its name. In a laptop market filled with catchy names like Inspiron, Portege and Vostro, one would think Asus would put a few of those marketing people into thinking up a captivating name. Alas, the company whose most memorable sub-brand name is the ‘Eee PC’ has never been very good at that.
Leaving branding behind, the looks of this business laptop are bland as well. Constructed of sober materials, this business laptop won’t get you noticed on a train or airplane. This is good for the discreet businessperson whose only interest is function.
This business laptop is equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor running at 2.66GHz. You also get 2GB of installed RAM. That’s about half the memory we like to see in a business laptop. That’s fine for your day-to-day word processing and email correspondence; however, if you need a business laptop that does more heavy lifting, you should look for one with more memory.
When we ranked our lineup, we looked for key features that business professionals use most often. Features that B43F lacks include Quick Start modes and a 10-key number pad. It does include a fingerprint scanner. Many business laptop manufacturers overlook that feature completely.
Ports lining the chassis of this business laptop include two USB ports, an SD Card reader, ESATA jack, HDMI hub, a DVD optical drive, a VGA output and an Ethernet port. With the exception of a Blu-ray drive, that’s every physical connectivity option we ranked on our comparison chart.
The display on this business laptop is a 14 inch-inch matte-finish LCD screen. Images and video displayed beautifully in the native 1366 x 768-pixel resolution. The display has enough real estate to work in multiple applications simultaneously.
This business laptop integrates Intel’s anti-theft technology. This suite of software and hardware prevents people with malicious intents from stealing your data. It detects when a laptop is stolen or used inappropriately. When that happens, you have the option to disable or destroy your sensitive information. Perhaps most importantly of all, it provides the ability to track down the physical location of the unit for retrieval with its integrated GPS tracking system.
The entire Asus B-series comes installed with Sonata-based batteries. Designed by Boston-Power, these batteries retain more of their charging capacity over time compared to a conventional laptop battery. The effect, according to Asus, is “triple the lifespan of typical notebook batteries.” Therefore, these Sonata batteries should retain around 80-percent capacity per charge after three years. There is no way to test this claim, so Asus offers a three-year warranty on the battery itself.
In the end, the Asus B43F is a mixed bag. A longer battery life coupled with integrated anti-theft technology make this laptop a tempting buy. However, the lack of key features and sparse memory push this business laptop into the "needs some improvement" category.
Pros
The B43F is one of the select few laptops to feature a long-lasting Sonata battery.
Cons
Its 2GB of RAM is half the memory we expect to see on a well-equipped business laptop.
The B43F is good for basic tasks such as word processing and email correspondence.
